Melfort Farm Project, Zimbabwe

Melfort Glen in Zimbabwe

The Melfort Glen residents home for displaced elderly Africans in Zimbabwe is situated in Melfort, Zimbabwe approximately 25 miles east of Harare.

The Melfort Farm Project was started in 1979 by Sister Noreen of the Little Company of Mary, who had found destitute elderly people living on the banks of the Mukuvisi River. As a result of publicity a Harare lawyer donated a 30 acre plot for the project and the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Harare agreed to take ownership of the land on behalf of the project

The project is now Ecumenical and receives support from the local Roman Catholic and Anglican churches, the Soroptimists, the Women's Institute and a local organisation, the Plant Oil Producers Association.

The project is cost effective and has approximately up to 35 residents living as a collective living Cooperative, with residents taking decisions for themselves. Overall supervision is taken care of by the local Working Committee.

A building to act as a Community hall was completed in 1995 and a small Clinic and Coordinators house was built with funds provided by HelpAge. Soroptimists also built a double cottage for residents and additional boreholes for water and toilets and shower block plus a new 6 double room block have been completed in 1998. A further two 6 double room blocks were completed in 1999. Since then the residents have been supported by members of the community, farmers and friends.
